We at Waiouru School believe that teaching our children to swim is a life saving priority for our tamariki. All of our teachers have completed the Kiwi Swim Safe programme and are qualified instructors.
We are fortunate to have access to the Waiouru Pool at the end of Camp Road, attached to the Gym. Unlike most New Zealand schools we are able to swim all year around and we will try and use the pool as much as possible including treat swims during the winter. This is only limited by bad weather as we have to walk to the pool.
We currently have two formal, instructional, swimming cycles during the year.
The first is in Term One, for five weeks leading up to our Waiouru School Swimming Sports. We then select our inter-school team to compete in the Waimarino Inter-School Competition that we host.
Our second cycle happens mid-Term Four in preparation for the summer swimming season. This is a formal six lesson intensive, followed by a weekly top up until the end of the year. In 2015 and 2016 we were able to offer paid in-school time lessons with Buzz Clarke’s Swim School for those families whom opted in and we hope to continue this in 2017. Children who did not attend the swim school still attended swimming lessons at the same time with their classroom teacher.
If you have any further questions, please speak to your classroom teacher directly.
